2022 Genesis GV80 Review
With its sporty demeanor and spacious design, the 2022 GV80 is an excellent choice for singles, couples and families. It earned a Car and Driver Editors’ Choice Award. Performance
The 2022 Genesis GV80 is fast for its size. When this Genesis SUV takes the 0-60 mile per hour sprint, the twin turbo V6 edition can nail that in 5.3 seconds. The turbo four spits out 300 horsepower while the twin-turbo generates 375 horsepower. Torque is 311 lb-ft or 391 lb-ft. The SUV’s luxury performance transmission has a widened gear-ratio span. Developed in-house, the 8-speed automatic unit is designed to improve acceleration even as it helps deliver better fuel economy. Another feature is the SUV’s unique build that has special reinforcements to ensure that the SUV body can handle what the engine is dishing out.
Capability, Utility, and Specifications
The GV80 is the largest vehicle in the Genesis fleet. The tailored interior manages to create the feeling of even more space, so it’s a win-win for the design and the actual passenger volume. There’s 108.7 cubic feet for people seated in up to five positions. The second-row legroom is an excellent 38.7 inches. Plus, this Genesis SUV is offering an alternative third row for families who need it. Top tow ratings, when properly equipped, are 6,000 pounds. Ground clearance is 8.1 inches. The cargo hold is a generous 34.9 cubic feet. It can grow to 84 cu.ft. with the second row down.
Exterior
Since Genesis was starting from scratch with this SUV, they had no rules about the shape and look of the vehicle. That’s why it is so distinctive. It has a sleeker look, but it’s absolutely as big as its rivals. The large mesh grille is flanked by two very long but thinner headlights on each side. Put together, the grille and those headlight shapes create the silhouette of the winged Genesis brand symbol. Other interesting aspects include a bigger, taller rear window and two-piece tail lights that mimic the front. As Top Speed magazine noted when reviewing how the real SUV looks in comparison to the original concept car, it’s surprising but this production SUV manages to be sportier than its original show car, but it does!
Interior
The GV80 interior is uncluttered and that gives it an expansive feeling even when it is occupied. This design aesthetic led to the use of wide, simple shapes. The long, slim air vents and wide infotainment screen are balanced by thin chrome lines and elliptical shapes. Phoenix shoppers will like that Genesis offers ventilated front and rear seats. Drivers love the Ergo Motion Driver’s Seat with seven air chambers to help with posture and comfort. Drive modes can alter the seat, adding bolstering when you shift into Sport. The exclusive Posture Care System can analyze your seat and help you find the right angles. If you feel fatigue, the Ergo seat can offer a stretching mode or an automatic posture correction. Taking care of babies and small kids, there are rear and side sunshades. An expansive panoramic glass roof and user-friendly ambient lighting can add to the atmosphere.
Technology
Entertainment tech starts with a 12.3-inch 3D instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. To the right of the steering wheel, there is a long 14.5-inch touchscreen. This is wide and narrow compared to the dash tablets that many manufacturers are using. It has a handwriting feature, a Genesis Integrated Controller, voice-activated features, and the advantage of Android Auto or Apple Carplay. Navigation is aboard, and it can coordinate with your Smart Cruise Control. The Lexicon audio system spreads 21 speakers around the cabin. In a clever first, the available customizable lighting can use its colors to tell you if you are in the correct transmission gear. For instance, red can designate reverse, and a user’s choice can designate drive.
Safety
The GV80 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus. There are so many standard driver assistance features, including automatic emergency braking, lane departure assistance, and blindspot coverage. The newest features include six new evasive features that make the automated systems even more cunning. When crossing or turning at a junction, the system knows when a vehicle is coming from the opposite lane or from the left or right. It can then apply the brakes to stop a side or head-on collision. The system also knows how to judge the speed and trajectory of vehicles two lanes over going in the same direction or one lane over going in the opposite direction. It can stop the vehicle with its lane-change oncoming or lane side features. Evasive steering torque assists once steering input has been initiated by the GV80 driver.
Parking Features
Genesis has so many ways to help you park. Helping to reduce accidents in a parking lot, there is a new front distance warning. Plus, there is an automatic braking mechanism that backs up the Rear Cross-Traffic alert. This collision avoidance assist should reduce the chances of fender benders and one-car mistakes. To reduce the chances of getting out of the GV80 at the wrong time, there is a new Safe Exit Assist. Even more exciting, only Genesis has the Remote Smart Parking Assistant. This lets you use remote drive/reverse functions to put the SUV into a narrow space, whether perpendicular or parallel.
